Hip and Joint Support For Dogs

Arthritis is the inflammation of joints. It can occur in dogs in many different forms. Examples of arthritis in dogs are osteoarthritis, infective, immune related, and idiopathic. Arthritis in dogs can cause such problems like changes to joint cartilage, joint fluid, and even the bones.

Some of the signs your dog may have arthritis are lameness in limbs, limping, swollen joints, pain on palpation of joints and stiffness. Stiffness in joints is normally worse in the morning and progressively gets better as the day goes on. Your dog may not want to go for walks as often and might not climb stairs anymore. Or he will lag behind on walks. He may also go through a personality change where the dog doesn’t want to be touched anymore and yelping in pain when he touched.

Obesity in dogs can cause arthritis. It can also be caused by a traumatic injury that may have occurred and created joint stability. Tearing a ligament can cause it too. Genetics can cause joints to weaken and become unstable, this happens in hip dysplasia. Sometimes young dogs develop joint problems and it is created from improper bone development.

Canine hip dysplasia is a type of degenerative joint disease. It can cause abnormal development of the hip joints in younger dogs and most are born with normal hips. Hip dysplasia is created by laxity of the muscles, connective tissue, and ligaments that support the joints. Abnormal developments create changes in the bone where the bones are not held in place and actually move apart. The joint capsule and the ligament between the bones stretch creating more instability of the joints. This is called subluxation.

Dogs of all ages can get hip dysplasia. Mostly dogs in the middle years or older but it has been reported in young puppies as young as 5 months old. The disease is more common in large breeds and giant breeds, however, mixed breeds are more prone to getting hip dysplasia. It can occur in smaller breeds as well. German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Great Danes, Golden Retrievers, and Saint Bernards are the breeds that most commonly get hip dysplasia.

There are treatments available for arthritis and hip dysplasia. One thing that will help with your dog’s arthritis if he is overweight is to put him on a diet and exercise him everyday. Surgery may be required to repair ligaments and stabilize joints. For hip dysplasia a total hip replacement may be needed. Acupuncture can help in pain management and decrease the amount of medication that may be needed.

Anti-inflammatory medications can provide relief from pain and reduce inflammation. There are also herbal medicines that are all natural that have a lot of great benefits for your dog. Hip and Joint Support for Dogs by Eniva has pure and high potency nutrients to support healthy hips and joint mobility for dogs. It will help with cartilage health and bone and tendon strength as well. This product is a liquid and contains no fillers, binders, and coatings that tablets have. Tablets and capsules can also cause allergies and sensitivity which slow down absorption of nutrients. You can find this at Alternative Health Supplements.

Dog Breeds and Nutritional Requirements

There has not been much research done in the field of nutritional requirements for the various breeds of dogs in today’s society but certain things are evident. The evolution of all dogs is linked to similar ancestry but some breeds have distinct nutritional requirements, processing nutrients in totally different ways.

For example; most of the toy breeds often experience difficulties in maintaining their blood/calcium levels when pregnant or lactating and commonly develop eclampsia (which we know as “milk fever”). When their diets are supplemented with additional calcium the blood/calcium level still doesn’t return to normal.

All animals require energy in the form of calories but for some breeds an excess of energy food will result in weight gain and sometimes obesity. There are certain groups of dogs where it is necessary to limit how much energy food they eat such as dogs which have been neutered and are lacking in exercise. These dogs will become overweight partly due to changes in the hormone balance and more so if fed too much high energy food. The puppies of large breed dogs may develop skeletal abnormalities, if overfed on energy food, because this type of food accelerates the speed at which they grow. Conversely, too little energy food can lead to a weakened immune system, diminished growth and malnutrition.

Working dogs have a higher requirement for energy food than the average household pet because they burn more calories and usually eat only one meal per day, without scraps or treats in between. Included in the working dog category, among others, are guard dogs, racing greyhounds, police or patrol dogs, herders, military dogs, sled-pulling dogs and hunters. These dogs also need more water than a domestic pet and it is wise to supplement their diets with recommended minerals and vitamins, especially if you are not feeding them specially manufactured food products for working dogs.

Food with a high fat content is loaded with calories and dogs love it but, whereas it may have excellent nutritional value for a sled pulling dog, don’t feed your Labrador too much of it because the Labrador has a general tendency to overeat and too much fat will lead to obesity. If your dog’s coat is looking dull or dry feeding him a little more fat or fat acid supplements will put the shine back into his coat.

As far as protein is concerned most dog breeds require approximately the same amount on a daily basis. However, there are certain types of terriers which have a tendency to develop kidney problems so if you have a terrier, ask your vet about controlling his protein intake. Too much protein has also been linked to aggressive behavior so if you have a breed with aggressive tendencies make sure his food doesn’t contain a high volume of protein.

In summary, read as much information as you can about the breed of dog you own so that you can become better informed about your particular dog’s nutritional requirements. You might also want to seeks advice from your vet who will have a wealth of experience and knowledge in this subject

Ensure Your Pet Stays Fit and Healthy

It is important to minimise any trips to the vet for many reasons – and this can be achieved by ensuring your pet stays fit and healthy. Regardless of the type of pet you own, maintaining your pet’s physical and mental wellbeing is simply a matter of good grooming, exercise and diet – supported by regular health checks.

It’s difficult to resist feeding your pet scraps, but it’s more important to provide your pet with a balanced diet. Feeding them good quality food with all the nutrients they need can aid development, prevent obesity and ensure a good immune system. If you don’t maintain a healthy diet for your pet then this will only lead to poor health.

Some pet snacks are specifically developed to reduce tarter and plaque build up. Cat and dog owners may still need to take their pets to the vet for regular dental checks, as bad dental health can adversely affect the overall health and wellbeing of your animal.

Active pets are healthy and happy pets – and maintaining a sensible exercise routine can help those pets with excess flab lose weight. Walking and running are great exercises for dogs and will increase flexibility and stamina. In addition, fun toys can keep both cats and dogs entertained by turning exercise into quality playtime.

As the warm weather approaches, it’s important to be prepared for nature and its effect on the health of your pet. Warmer weather brings insects that could harm your pet or cause discomfort; therefore, be aware of bees and wasps, as a sting can be distressing to cats and dogs. What’s more, flea infestations can affect both pets and your family, so remember to regularly treat your pet and home with a flea preventative.

In addition to showering your pet with love and affection, regular grooming can help your pet stay trim and healthy. Washing your pet will not only help reduce germs and prevent diseases, but it also ensures you are properly examining for potential problems that may cause pain and discomfort to them.

Keeping up-to-date with check-ups and vaccinations is essential to maintaining the health of your pet. It’s also wise to take out pet insurance, as emergency healthcare or prolonged health problems can be costly. The knowledge that your veterinary bills are taken care of can leave you free to concentrate on the wellbeing of your pet.

Being a responsible pet owner means taking care of your pet’s safety, health and cleanliness – and it is important to remember that taking good care of your pet doesn’t have to be a chore.

Canine Licking – Why Is Your Dog Licking Everything?

Are you frustrated with canine licking?  If you have a dog licking everything in sight, including you, herself, and the carpet, you and your dog have a problem.  What causes this odd dog behavior?  And is there any way to stop dog licking?

Why Does A Dog Lick Everything?

Dogs lick for many reasons.  Dogs greet their owners and show their affection for them by licking them.  It’s also a way of showing submission to the pack leader.  This is normal dog behavior.

But sometimes dogs carry this to an extreme, either licking themselves until they develop bald spots, or engaging in excessive licking in dogs around their owners.  Other dogs lick the carpet, or furniture or other items.  These bad dog habits can be extremely frustrating, and even mystifying.

Any time a dog is licking herself enough to cause a bald spot or even a sore, she needs a trip to the vet.  Many problems can cause excessive canine licking, including fleas, allergies, arthritis, and skin irritations.  The more the dog licks, the more she itches, and the more she licks.  It becomes a vicious cycle, and your dog can develop a lick granuloma as a result.

If your dog licks her paws after she eats, she could have a food allergy.  Try changing her diet.  Check the first four ingredients, and look for a food that doesn’t have corn or meat by-products as one of them.  Check the protein source, too.  If chicken is listed in the first four ingredients, look for one that has lamb or beef instead.

Once medical causes are ruled out, you can assume it’s a dog behavior problem.

Can You Stop Dog Licking?

Yes, you can, but you may have to play detective to figure out why your dog won’t stop licking.  Often, excessive canine licking is due to anxiety.  The dog is licking herself to make herself feel better about something going on in her life.  It can quickly become obsessive compulsive behavior.

Try to identify why your dog is anxious.  Is your dog left by herself for long hours every day?  It’s possible that you need to be giving your dog more time and attention.

Dogs also need at least an hour and a half of rousing exercise every day to use up all their pent-up energy.  If you don’t have this much time to spend with your dog, you may want to consider hiring a dog walker during the day.

Many owners inadvertently train their dogs to develop bad dog habits.  Be aware of when you give your dog the most attention.  Is it when she’s doing something annoying, like licking herself or you or your furniture?  If so, you’re reinforcing the behavior.  Dogs want your attention and will do whatever it takes to get it.

Start giving her lots of attention when she’s doing something you like.  When she starts to lick, say “no!” very firmly.  If she’s licking you, turn away and ignore her for a couple of minutes.  If she’s licking the furniture or carpet, redirect her with a toy.  With time and persistence, you can successfully train her to end this bad dog habit.

A Good Dog Obedience Course Can Work Wonders

You can see how easy it is to accidentally train your dog to do the exact opposite of what you want her to.  Avoid this problem by finding a good dog training course that includes a free consultation with an experienced dog trainer.

So go ahead…stop dog licking by taking the first step toward solving the problem of your dog licking everything in sight.

Fish Tank Aquariums – Glass Or Acrylic?

Traditionally virtually all fish tank aquariums were made of glass but in the last couple of years the advances in plastic technology spurred a new wave of acrylic tanks on the market. So, is an acrylic fish tank better than a glass one? Many old school fish keepers still swear by glass tanks, but the new generation is embracing acrylic tanks with open arms.

The one is not necessarily better or worse than the other, but they do have some important differences that you might want to keep in mind. Here are the 5 reasons why I like acrylic tank aquariums:

1. Scratching

Although glass is much harder and more difficult to scratch, the scratches are permanent. Acrylic on the other hand is easy to repair when it is scratched. Acrylic polishing kits are available in many places, and these can be used to remove scratches and make your tank good as new.

2. Weight

A filled up fish tank can be heavy, especially when you get to 50 gallons or more. Glass tanks can weigh as much as 10 times more than an acrylic tank. Acrylic is a very advanced material which gives it a lot of strength for very little weight. A lighter tank aquarium means that you can support it on normal furniture (don’t need a special stand) and if you have to move it you can.

3. Seamlessness

Glass tanks are made of sheets of glass joined together while acrylic can be molded into a single seamless shape. Not only does this give you greater clarity, but shat slick seamless look is very modern and looks really good.

3. Shape

Acrylic is easily molded and formed into almost any shape. Although glass can be curved it tends to distort the images behind it and you won’t get that with acrylic. Acrylic tanks come in a great variety of shapes and sizes to suit virtually any space you have available. You don’t need to be confined to the square or rectilinear glass tanks anymore.

4. Strength

Glass is very strong in compression, but because it is so hard it’s very brittle. Acrylic is softer and can be twisted without breaking. This makes your acrylic tank aquarium less prone to cracks and even breaks. On top of that, you can even drill holes into an acrylic tank (for overflows) without compromising it’s strength.

5. Brightness And Clarity

Most commercial aquariums use acrylic for their windows. This is not because it is stronger, but because the quality of viewing is much better. The science behind it is that glass has a different index of refraction than water which means that the image behind the glass (the fish) is distorted. Acrylic on the other hand has nearly the same index of refraction as water which give the appearance of the fish floating in mid air – you can barely see the water.

Regardless of your preference, there’s no doubt that acrylic aquarium tanks are sexy. They are definitely the in thing and here to stay. The seamlessness, brightness and amazing transparency makes it the ideal solution for a showpiece aquarium that can brighten up any room or office.

Dog Knot: What is It?

Dog knot can have a variety of meanings. The dictionary of colloquial phrases and formal languages has several meanings for it. Dog knot can be defined differently, depending on its context. And it would all boil down to the speaker’s point of view and manner of speaking.

In the engineering context, dog knot may mean the enlarged section of a rod or pipe that is used to retain a hole. These dog knot structures are found inside buildings and the likes. This engineering definition of dog knot is not really popular. As such, it is rarely used even within the industry. But then again, this is the initial meaning of the term. It has, however, evolved greatly and at times, quite inappropriately.

A dog knot is also a type of knot tied round a shaft. This is done so that the rope attached to the structure won’t come loose. If you are an expert in making knots, then you should know how to make this particular knot. The knot is quite useful, especially if you need to tie two objects together with a string or rope.

However, as far as dog knot is concerned, people highly associate it to sex nowadays. The term actually came from two dogs mating. Dogs mate with each other during the bitch’s heat season and when the act do occur, it is next to impossible to take the two pets apart from each other. They are bound together by male dog’s reproductive organ, thus causing the dog knot as it is referred to.

Dog knots occur when the dog is involved in an intercourse because its penis inflates. Since the penis becomes bigger inside the bitch’s body after penetration, it becomes stop the act. This is the reason why you can’t take two dogs mating with each other apart. This is also the reason why the act is referred to as dog knot by breeders and some pet owners.

Over time, the dog knot concept became applicable in humans too. A lot of perverts tried to adopt dog knot to their sexual actions. The main idea is to be attached to a woman in the same was as two dogs are welded together. Dogs mate either back-to-back or with the male dog in standing position behind the female dog. This is also the position that some partners assume as they try to apply the dog knot concept in their intercourse. This definition of dog knot is part of the colloquial or slang dictionary and is never used in formal writing.

There’s yet another dog knot definition that has to be explored. Dog knot may also pertain to the movement or waste of a dog. Dog wastes are similar to a pretzel in form. And so, many pet owners refer to their dog’s fritter as the dog knot. Again, this dog knot definition is considered slang.

Simply put, the real meaning of this term would depend entirely on how it was used. With the different definition of dog knot, it is always upon the speaker to associate the correct words to the term to express the right idea.

Breeding and Raising Good Quality Riding Horses

Breeding good quality mares to good quality stallions produce that great foal we are all looking. No matter what breed of horse you plan on raising the importance of quality always comes first. Whether you are looking for raise a foal to become that great trail horse, show horse, family horse or pet you always need quality. When I think of quality I think of quiet, good minded, good conformation, strong bone and feet, kind eye, willing to please attitude and athletic ability. We believe you do need these qualities in both the sire and the dam to get that all around good foal. It’s always nice to add a little color for instance if you prefer a buckskin, palomino, dun, black or nice paint horse.

When you have a mare and are looking for a stallion to cross with her you need to consider many things. One of our first is the conformation of the mare and what we want to improve. Then you look for a stud that has some of the same good qualities your mare has and then some of the qualities in the stud that are needed to make that great foal. For instance, if I had a mare that had a more common head I would try to find a stud that has a smaller more refined head. If I had a mare with a short neck maybe find a stud with a little longer neck if that is what you want to improve. Disposition is one of the main qualities to look for when breeding and should never be over looked. You will hear people say “I have a mare that is nasty or unfriendly so I don’t enjoy riding her …I’ll just use her as a broodmare”. This is wrong and if people would think about it why would you want to breed a bad disposition and have that horse produce foals that could carry on the same bad quality?

It’s also very important to consider the facility you have when raising foals and whether or not you have the time to care for both the mare and foal. If you are breeding for an early foal you have to consider shelter and whether or not you can keep the foal warm enough in bad weather. Foals are healthy outside and if the timing is good for you it is always nice to have them foal in May when the grass is green and the foal can be outside or depending on what state you live in and the climate. Many breeders that show like to have the foals born as early as January and February so they have a head start for the showing season. Many have heated barns for the early foaling mares or foal blankets to keep them warm or of course if you are in the warmer climate areas this might not be a concern. Overall, there is a lot to consider when deciding to breed your mare.

Every breeder has their own way of worming, vaccinating etc. We like to worm the mares and give them a 4-way (Eastern,Western,Tetanus,Flu) shot a month before they foal and then worm the mare the day after she foals. We normally will worm the foal at day 7 and then every month until they are a year old. We recommend that you get with your veterinarian to get a worming and vaccinating schedule that works for you. It is very important to keep the foals wormed on a regular basis to avoid colic and to stay healthy and strong. Again please consult with your veterinarian for the correct vaccinations and wormers.

Imprinting the foal is very important. This consists of spending time with the foal and touching it all over will build trust and the foal will soon consider you a friend. Putting a halter on the foal and leading it around when it is young is much easier than when it is older and too big to handle. Touching the legs, ears and feet always helps to keep the foal tame and trusting people. The foal will rely on their dam for the first week or so but as the foal grows older will start to explore their surroundings. It’s very important to keep things out of the stall and pasture that the foal can get caught up in or hurt on. It is best to have a safe fence or stall with not sharp edges or places where the foal get their head caught or hurt.

One of the most important things to remember is to not breed for quantity but for quality. There are too many unwanted horses in the world and when deciding to breed make sure you are aware of the responsibilities and care needed for these horses. Raising a foal is a joyful experience and can be very rewarding.
